Long time no post!
A lot has been going on, but without going on and on about life and stuff, I'll just skip to the cool stuff.
3d Printing!
For those not in-the-know, there has been a recent revolution in home 3d printing that is quickly changing the way tinkerers and artists, make and create.
3d printing is a technology where a machine "prints out" a real tangible object from a computer file, often a 3d model or 3d scan of a real object. The material varies between manufacturers and technologies. You can print in plastic, metal, ceramic, resin, glass and more. The machines that do this have been around for a little over a decade. The cheapest commercial 3d printers have been around $10,000 and up averaging about $40,000.
In the last few years, open-source groups have popped up aiming to make 3d printing inexpensive and accessible to the masses. One of the groups which has grown to a business, MakerBot Industries
www.makerbot.com get a lot of press recently and is somewhat the "face" of home 3d printing. They sell a DIY 3d printer kit for $1,299. Significantly cheaper than the commercial ones! The quality of the prints are improving all the time and the things that people are making with them are incredible. They even have a dA-like site of their own called Thingiverse
www.thingiverse.com where folks upload their designs and others can print, alter and improve and re-upload to their hearts content.
They recently held a contest to have a company mascot designed. Out of almost 100 entries, MY DESIGN WON!!! the prize: A 3D PRINTER!
I'm putting it together right now!
Soon I'll be printing my 3d models in ABS plastic (the LEGO plastic) and building real things with them! So Awesome!
I'll be uploading some of the stuff I do here as well as on Thingiverse. People may not see it right now, but 3d printing will be a really big thing very soon and I am thrilled to be at the forefront.
More to come soon!
